Just got back from seeing the new Sherlock Holmes movie. The critics have been all over the place with this. Rotten Tomatoes have an average of 60% with it, and Metacritic gives it an average of 48%. What you should take from this isn’t the score as such, that just makes it look crap. It’s an aggregate site, and what it basically means that about half of all the critics liked it, and half did not. This pretty much sums up my expectations for this film. If you had a problem with Sherlock Holmes having any action in it in-between the more ‘sober’ sections, then this film still isn’t going to be for you. However, if you did in fact enjoy that then I have good news for you – it’s great fun. For the first time in ages we finally have a screen villain who isn’t just a faceless foil, Jared Harris proving himself brilliant as Moriarty. The set-pieces are much more grandiose than the original, a chase through a forest proving a standout moment for me, I enjoyed the use of slow-mo again (though I know how this bugs some people), and we get to see 19th century France, Germany and Switzerland as well which was pretty cool.
So, yeah. If you liked the first one, this is more of the same but better (with a weak start mind.) If you don’t like Sherlock being shot at repeatedly, I’d suggest sticking to the BBC Show instead. Which is also good. In fact, I’m going to go and watch that now!
